Trunk or Treat Ideas

October 9, 2023

We love Trunk or Treat fun around here! It’s been a great way to have fun with the family and connect with people in our community. We’ve met some of our best friends through our Neighborhood’s trunk or treat event! If you’ve been thinking about participating in one this year, or are intrigued with the idea, here is a post sharing some of the ones we have done!

One year we did a shark/ocean themed trunk! Amazon really pulled through for me on this one- haha. I used ocean wave tablecloths to line the trunk. (It was a multi pack.) I grabbed some translucent door streamers, some shark themed signs to tape up and some shark balloons. I got metallic blue balloons (and mixed in some light blue balloons we had) and wrapped them up with a large net that looked like a fishing net!

The daddy shark costume was a hit! My husband knew how to work it doing all the shark dance moves haha. I was a scuba diver and wore my mom uniform – leggings- haha…. and a black shirt and some snorkel gear! I did take off the flippers to walk around. ;) But while passing out candy, it was a fun touch.
My FAVORITE part about this ocean trunk were the giant shell bowls! They were plastic and the perfect holders for our candy.
If you have a toddler…you need to dress that child up as a shark one year because the waddling around with the wagging shark tail was just too funny.
SHARK THEMED TRUNK OR TREAT – REEL

Last year we did a Space themed trunk! I have to say, my astronaut costume was the most COMFORTABLE costume! Here is Ben’s Astronaut costume. Our youngest was the only one who matched our theme (I don’t pressure the big kids to match us- that ship has sailed haha.) But Chase was the cutest little astronaut (here is his astronaut costume) and he was soooo happy when he saw our costumes. He kept hugging us!

Anyways, this theme was an easy one to do! I created a balloon garland with black, white and silver balloons. Then taped on top some silver star balloons. I also strung some up with balloons along the inside/front. I used metallic silver tablecloths to line the inside of the trunk. The backdrop of twinkly lights was a fun DIY! I just used a black trifold foam board (the ones for science projects!) – poked holes all over with a pencil…and then popped twinkling Christmas lights in through the back! Easy and it looked so cool! I also created our own moon! Just using some foam, I carved it to the shape we wanted, and then I used a spackling foam spray (what you can use for drywall patches)- making different thickness/crater like spots. I painted it shades of grey and white and then to top it off I dotted on some white spots.
SPACE THEMED TRUNK OR TREAT – REEL

My boys really loved the moon and kept walking around with it after the event haha. I ordered this pop up space ship off Amazon and it was the best purchase all season long! The boys loved playing in it..and during the actual trunk or treat, it was a fun spot for the kiddos to climb in and out of. They felt like astronauts! It honestly didn’t make sense for me to DIY a space ship when this one was so dang cute and something the kids could keep on enjoying. (It was cute in the playroom too!)

The girls also did their own trunk last year – a Zoo!
This one is a great easy one! Just gather up all your favorite zoo themed stuffed animals to throw in the trunk! I used some wood sticks, from the gardening section, and just zip tied them together to make a “fence” But you could do anything to get the same idea. I used a jungle themed party tablecloth to line the trunk…and we draped some jungle themed leaf garlands all over!
The costumes for this one are pretty comfy too…just grab some animal onesies and you are all set! Here is Sophia’s Tiger Costume. Here is Sienna’s Monkey Costume. Another person could dress up as a zoo keeper to keep everyone in line! :) We used a letter board we had to write a message “Don’t feed the animals.” Kids LOVED this one and spent forever just looking at all the animals in the trunk.

The funny thing is SO MANY PARENTS put their kids up to sit in the truck bed and take a photo.
It legit turned into a whole photo op area haha. It was fun!

The main thing you need to know, is that you can go big or small when it comes to these events! Some people have huge displays and some just have a few decorations- the bottom line is the kids LOVE IT ALL! As long as you have candy to pass out…your trunk will be a hit! ;)

If you want to find out if your community has any Trunk or Treat events planned, just check out Facebook and look up local events! There are usually ones being held at churches and neighborhoods that are open to the local community. Have fun!
