Quarantine with 6 kids (including a newborn) has been a doozy but something that has kept our spirits high and given us some family fun has been doing themed days! We’ve been doing themed days that last anywhere from 2 days to a week! It’s whatever we want it to be. At night, the girls and I work on a theme for the little kids. It’s become “our thing” and a way for me to have special time with my older girls. Also, getting creative has been great for my mental health. I love a project! We have a snack and couple crafts that go with it. The structure and planned activity has been nice and needed as we do this quarantine life! Today I’m sharing one of our favorite themes: Space Theme!
We have a little side table in our Kitchen and it’s become our spot for the set up. In our craft room I have a bunch of past party decor and construction paper that we have been pulling from. I use a tiered tray to hold all of our supplies that we’ll need for that theme’s activities/snacks.
As far as what we use for snacks, most of the items are things we already have in the pantry or I have added a special candy/treat to our grocery order pick up. It’s the little things that help get everyone through these strange times. Also, putting the snacks in little containers like cupcake wrappers seems to always make it more fun for the kids!
We had a few space themed crafts planned. The first one we did was super easy! You probably have everything you need already! The supplies is foil, black paper and glue. I had the kids rip up the foil into little specks to put into their night sky. This is a great activity for little ones and working on their fine motor skills….but my older kids got into it too! They just are a little more detailed in their crafting.
Our second Space themed craft was one of our favorites! We made space scenes using a fun technique with wax crayons and watercolor paint! You first draw your space scene with crayons… the more you fill in your drawings the better! (example: if drawing a moon…don’t leave any white peeking through!) Then you paint over your scene with black water color paint! Because of the wax, the paint won’t stick to it and you’ll get a pretty picture where the colors pop! TIP: use a paper towel or napkin to dab dry the watercolor paint that will bubble up on top of the wax crayons. It makes it dry nicer. We shared this on Instagram and it was soooo cool being tagged in your own space scene creations!!

Here is my Space scene! I wanted in on the fun. ;)
The last space themed craft we did was coffee filter planets!
First the kids colored coffee filters with blue and green washable markers…then we sprayed them with water outside to get the colors to spread. While those dried, the kids used qtips and white paint to dot stars on black paper. We used Elmers glue to stick the planet to the black paper but I would suggest you use a glue stick! (then you won’t get those lines!) The kids loved this one and were so proud of their planets. You could really get creative with this craft and make a bunch of the planets!
Thanks for checking out our space themed family fun! Looking back at this season of COVID19, there will be plenty of hard moments we had to live through…but I’ll also treasure these family memories.
