Boys’ Shared Room Makeover + Organization

October 28, 2019

We were so excited when we moved into this house and the boys had a huge space to share a room!
I just finished getting it organized and set up to be functional and fun for them!
Today I’ll give you a quick little tour and try to source everything. If you’re trying to get a handle on clothes and toy storage… this post is for you!
All affordable options to make the space easy for the kids to clean up but also look nice.
We also recently changed the bed set up and I think it played a big part in helping our newly 4 year old finally sleep through the night!
I really do think having an organized and special space for your kids helps EVERYONE!
This is the bonus room over the garage. With such a long room I broke it into different areas based off needs: sleep, clothes, toys.
And once I kind of nailed down what the boys needed in their room it all came together pretty quick.
One day I would love to add a rug but for now – this is it!

First Up…WALLS:
Paint Color is Valspar’s Blue Grass Mood.
I knew I wanted to only paint certain walls and then keep the rest of the room light and bright. I got some black triangle decals on Amazon and they were AWESOME! Loved how easy they were to put on and rearrange. I got them because the reviews were good and they came through! I loved how it had that black and white batman feel…and gave a wallpaper look to the space. Loved the pattern on the walls and how it made everything else really come together.

TOY STORAGE!
I got this 6 cube organizer from Target. I loved the color and height/width of it. Their big toys have space to be on the top and I liked having them off the floor and all in one place.
The big kids can stand there and play with them…or when Asher plays with his little brother in there they put them on the floor to play.
The bins we already had and they are from Target as well. I liked the look of the basket weave type bins but I didn’t like how scratchy some of them were. These are not filled to the brim with toys either. Right now we only have certain toys out: Paw Patrol, PJ Masks and super heroes. We also have some cars/construction toys from a recent birthday. Everything else has been sorted and are in plastic bins in our master closet. (up high.) I LOVE Holidays and gifting my kids toys they are loving but it got to be too much for them to clean up. We had too many weekends of me using a batman voice to get them to help me clean up the crazy. SO for now we are going to play with these and then cycle them through.
The black frame is from Target and the print was one I picked up at the Pinners Conference in Atlanta!
The shelf was made with some wood from Lowe’s and brackets from IKEA.

CLOTHES STORAGE:
We had originally been using cubed storage units with labeled bins for their clothes.
But with the boys getting bigger..their clothes were getting bigger! And it just felt a little tight.
So I got two mixed material dressers from Target. They also had larger ones but I felt like I wanted to simplify it for the boys so they could help with putting clothes away.
In the closet we have one 6 cube unit still. That holds an underwear bin, sock bin, they each have a church shirt bin and a hoodie bin.
In their main dressers the top is for shirts, middle for bottoms and the lowest one is pajamas.
I had a large piece of wood cut in half for the shelves (one on this wall and one above the toys storage) The brackets are again from IKEA here.
I’ve collected globes over the years (most of them from Good will or Marshall’s or Target!) I thought they would be a fun touch in the boys’ room and they were so excited to get some of “mom’s collection” ;) I had gotten the map art sometime this past year on sale at target…I was so happy to finally get it on the wall! I put on the shelf a framed photo of their dad playing ball (they had it in their old room) and then a cute sign from Hobby Lobby I’ve had for years. The mirror is also an old find from Michael’s.
I can’t remember where I got the deer years ago…but probably Hobby Lobby or Michael’s.
I usually end up using decor I already have – mixed in with a new item – to make a gallery wall come together. For this space the shelves were the new thing!

BED SET UP:
We used to have bunk beds in here – and they were great in our last house because of the small space. But we stared having trouble with Asher staying in his bed all night right around the same time we got the bunk beds. After trying ALL the things to get him to sleep..I finally told Ben I thought we needed to try a new bed set up. Luckily… it helped! I think just the new set up in general and being on the same level as his brother made a big difference in helping him feel secure. We also did some other stuff that helped and I’ll do a full blog post on that eventually!
The beds themselves are from SAGSTUA from IKEA! They come in different colors too! I don’t LOVE the gold detail on them but I might just paint that part a matte black one of these days.
We had the Target comforters from before. I really wish that I could do some cute pillows on the boys bed but I HONESTLY just don’t want to have more work for them to do when they make their bed. I know I would just end up being the one picking up pillows. ;) Instead.. I left it empty fo rhyme to put a few of their favorite stuffed animals. Both of the boys sleep with a ton of them- We have an old metal wire basket (also from Target) in their closet where I put the overflow. Same with blankets etc. I’m slowly trying to get them to just sleep with a few instead of being covered in stuffed animals. ;)
Above the beds are some cute circle shelves I got at Target one day on sale. I loved the metal detail in the room and the grey color. (They also come in gold!) I wanted to give them an area where over time they could put their favorite little trinkets. Micah is just now getting into Legos and he can put his favorite creations up there over time.
Asher loves all his soft paw patrol pups and it’s turned into his little storage/display for them. Which I like rather than all over the bed.
The curtain rod is from IKEA and the curtains are black out ones from Target. THEY ARE AWESOME.
Asher still naps on days when he doesn’t have preschool and that room goes DARK.

BOOKSHELVES AND SUPERHEROES:
I knew I wanted to get some of our shelves up into the room for the boys’ favorite books.
The picture ledges are MOSSLANDA from IKEA and we shuffle through different books. All Usborne Books & More titles because they are the best!
One of the storage needs in the room was for ALL THE ACTION FIGURES the boys had. I went to Hobby Lobby on the hunt for some wall organizers where the boys could store them.
I found these and got them on sale! We ended up screwing them right into the wall (not suing the back wall hooks as if it was a picture frame.) Mainly because I knew that the boys would pull them right off the wall as they took a guy up and out ya know? So far they’ve been AWESOME. I’ve found the boys sitting there playing with them and grabbing books. I also love that it’s such a specific spot for toys that the boys always clean that spot up first. It’s easy for them!
The circle map art is from Hobby Lobby.

I also hung up this basketball hoop in the corner from Hobby Lobby.
The room is so big and “mostly” indestructible that I let them shoot a small plastic ball into he hoop. They love it. and so does dad. ;)
I’ll walk in and find him laying on the floor with a baby on him and “playing hoops” with the boys. haha.
I loved the wood backboard!

Well that’s it! If you have other questions let me know!
As always, I’m sure I’ll change things over time but these are the bones of the room right now.
So thankful to have a functional space! Thanks for stopping by!

Love the superhero storage. I think I will need to find something like this for my son. Some many super heros and Lego!!!
